The Understorey
The Understorey is the first book in the series 'The Leaving' by Fisher Amelie.
I usually don't like it when books start with the dramatic end… It always feels like the author just told me huge spoiler without giving me the choice if I want to hear it or not. But in this book I think that without the "spoiler" I wouldn't have loved the book or was really interested in the book as I am right now. At this point I still haven't finished it, the book just getting to the thriller part which takes the author an extremely long time to get to. Don't get me wrong up until now the book was really good, a guy and a girl discover they have a deep supernatural connection and at first they stalk each other, then they fall in love. One is popular, one is not and there's a lot of resistance because of it. Most of the book up until now was just about an epic romance story and almost nothing more. The author wrote it beautifully and I loved reading It, really, but if I didn't know from the start that there will be mystery and suspense I would probably peg the book as just another epic romance of two teenagers that I know too familiarly from my other books, I would be only half interested in it and already planning the next book that I should read.
~*~Spoiler Alert~*~
Just finished it and Oh My God! The "big conflict" really made me love the author. I love authors that are not afraid to hurt their main characters. For example, Veronica Roth who the Divergent trilogy is an amazing author and her series is probably the best I've read (spoiler alert) but even when she killed all Tris's friends and a lot of other people she wouldn't hurt Tris or Tobias. Maybe she took it a bit too far I mean with Jesse carving the E into her chest but it was a nail biter after a kind of nice and quiet book. She could've made the after scene and epilogue a little longer with more of conversations with their families. She just skipped what I always believe is the best part… the people's reaction when they hear what happened. But that's just me. I was a little disappointed when I found out that even though their abnormal connection it wasn't a supernatural book but Fisher completely made up for that in her amazingly written turn of events with Jesse. Anyway the book was amazing and I really recommend it to everyone. If you don't consider the end the book is for lite and wonderful reading. Fisher couldn't have picked a better way to promote the next book in the series. Can't wait to read the next book, the last sentence was the best way to end the book it left me dying to know what will happen with Jesse.
